Wierschem national tournament-bound in slowpitch softball
Former Willmar standout Chelsey Wierschem is headed to a national tournament in slowpitch softball.
She has been playing for Buff Nutrition, a Duluth-based team made up of UMD Bulldogs and UW-Superior Yellowjacket players.
The team plays in the United States Specialty Sports Association in Class D slowpitch.
They played in the Minnesota USSSA women’s classic earlier this month and went 5-0 to qualify for the national tournament September in Kissimmee, Fla.
Wierschem pitched all five games and was named tournament MVP.
Wierschem played the past four seasons for the Yellowjacket women’s hockey team.
Cuddyer runs hit streak to team-record 24 games
DENVER (AP) — Colorado Rockies outfielder Michael Cuddyer has lined a single to center in the second inning against the New York Mets, extending his hitting streak to a franchise-record 24 games.
Cuddyer entered Thursday’s game tied with Dante Bichette before breaking the team mark with a hit off starter Jeremy Hefner on a hot afternoon.
Cuddyer’s hitting streak is the longest in the majors this season.
He has reached base in 43 straight games, also a team record. The previous mark was 41 set by Andres Galarraga and matched by Todd Helton. Both of those, though, were over the course of two seasons.
Cuddyer has raised his season average to .346 during the streak. He is a .271 career hitter.
