Former Stinger Dozier named top prospect in Pioneer League

Kansas City Royals’ prospect Hunter Dozier was named the top prospect in the short-season Pioneer League in Baseball America’s postseason rankings.

Dozier played for the Idaho Falls Chukars and hit .303 with seven home runs in 208 at bats.

He was the Willmar Stingers’ starting shortstop in 2012 and was selected by the Royals with the eighth overall pick in this summer’s Major League Baseball Draft.

Baltimore Orioles prospect and 2012-13 Stingers’ pitcher Steven Brault landed at No. 16 on the list for the short-season New York-Penn League, posting a 2.09 ERA in 43 innings for the Aberdeen (Md.) Ironbirds.

Two Cardinals get CLC nod as top performers

 Honored for recent efforts as Central Lakes Conference Performers of the Week are two Willmar student/athletes:

Football/defense — Vaughn Johnson, junior linebacker made 7 tackles (4 solo), plus 4 sacks in Saturday’s 55-21 win at Alexandria.

Tennis/singles — Cayle Hovland, eighth-grader at 1-singles picked up wins vs. Alexandria and Marshall and also played tough in two losses to CLC rivals St. Cloud Tech and Brainerd.
