6 Cardinals land on 1st team for All-CLC football
The Willmar Cardinals, after finishing 6-2 in the Central Lake Conference, have six players on the All-CLC first team plus five honorable mentions:
First Team — Junior QB Augustine Hahn, senior TE Adam Nibaur, junior RB/LB Vaughn Johnson, junior RB Michael Heitzman, senior lineman Leon Richards and senior WR/CB Chris Cunningham.
Honorable Mention — Junior WR Austin Grove, senior center Carter Shuldes, senior LB Trey Tollefson, and senior defensive ends Cole Hagen and Joey Lee.
Roehl, Grussing are All-CLC volleyball picks
The All-Central Lakes Conference volleyball team for 2013 includes junior libero Allie Roehl and junior setter Riley Grussing from Willmar.
Cardinal junior middle hitter Dani Rosen and junior outside hitter Leah Ruter were named honorable mention.
Johnson of Atwater is All-NSIC football selection
Senior offensive linemen Kyle Johnson (Atwater/ACGC) is one of four Southwest Minnesota State University football players named first team All-NSIC South Division.
The 6-foot-5, 300-pound right tackle has started 27 consecutive games and helped an offense that averaged an NSIC best 535.6 yards and a league-high 288.5 passing yards per game. Johnson was named All-NSIC South honorable mention last season.
In all, 14 Mustangs were honored by the NSIC.
Twins acquire LHP Johnson from Pirates for Welker
The Minnesota Twins announced that they have acquired left-handed pitcher Kris Johnson from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for right-handed pitcher Duke Welker.
Johnson, 29, went 0-2, 6.10 ERA (10.1 IP, 7 ER) in four games (one start) for the Pirates last season. The 6-foot-4, 195-pounder went 10-4, 2.39 ERA (135.2 IP, 36 ER) with 43 walks and 94 strikeouts in 26 games (21 starts) for Triple-A Indianapolis. He was originally drafted by the Red Sox in the first round (40th overall) of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft out of Wichita State University.
Welker, 27, was officially acquired by the Twins on October 5 as the player to be named later in the Justin Morneau/Alex Presley trade with Pittsburgh August 31. Welker went 3-4, with a 3.57 ERA (63.0 IP, 25 ER), nine saves, 31 walks and 65 strikeouts in 48 appearances for Triple-A Indianapolis last season. The 6-foot-7, 240-pounder also appeared in two games for the Pirates last season.
