College hoops games at Ridgewater postponed

The Wednesday evening basketball doubleheader at Ridgewater College has been postponed due to concerns over weather and travel conditions. No make-up date was announced.


Ice opportunities at Willmar Civic Center

Adaptive/wheel chair curling for all ages starts today at the Civic Center’s Blue Line Center. The 4-5 p.m. sessions run through March 13.

Open curling is available 5-8 p.m. on Saturdays this month ($3 fee). Open skating is 6:30-8 p.m. Sundays through Dec. 28 ($3, skate rental $2).

The Willmar Cardinals boys swimming and diving team opens the season today at Cold Spring against Rocori in a Central Lakes dual meet.

The Willmar girls basketball team tips off the season in a non-conference clash at Marshall.

Top gym team here

Willmar fans got to see one of the premier gymnastics programs in Class A in Tuesday’s Cardinal opener against Melrose. Tonight at the Kennedy gym, they can see the top team in the Central Lakes Conference since the middle of the last decade. St. Cloud Tech is 62-0 in a Central Lakes dual meets beginning 2005-06. The Tigers placed third in the Class AA State meet with a score of 149.150 last season.

Shaun Condon off

to good start at SMSU

Shaun Condon of Clara City (MACCRAY) is averaging a team-best 12.3 ppg for the Southwest Minnesota State University Mustangs men’s basketball team (2-4). The 6-foot-2 junior guard scored a career-high 19 points on 6 of 12 shooting at the University of Sioux Falls on Saturday, an 87-83 loss.

On Nov. 11, at Marshall, he wrote his name into the Mustangs’ single-game record book when he made 15 (of 16) free throws in an 89-72 loss to Fort Hays State (Kan.).

Bergeson, Abbas seeing action at Concordia

Brett Bergeson (Montevideo) and Corey Abbas (Renville, MACCRAY) are seeing action off the bench for the Cobbers (3-1). Both are sophomore guards averaging 14.8 minutes and 12.3 minutes, respectively. Bergeson is scoring at a 6.8 ppg clip. Freshman Dylan Hoerchler (Atwater, ACGC) is also on the roster.

Freshman forward Austin Rambow  (Willmar) is seeing spot action and has scored 13 points on 6 of 11 shooting for the Vikings (1-7).

At last, a snow fall for Nordic ski practice

The season’s first snow on Wednesday came in the nick of time for the Willmar Cardinals Nordic ski teams which now has at least one day of skiing going into its first meet. Since Nov. 11, the team had to be content with dry-land training. The Cardinals open today at Powder Ridge, at Kimball, where the made snow has been topped off by the real stuff.
