The Insider: Hansen opens at state tennis tourney
Jess Hansen, a sophomore on the Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd boys tennis team, starts play in the Class A Individual State Tournament today at the Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
Hansen, the two-time defending Section 3A singles champion, meets Foley sophomore Zach Kantor in the first round at 8 a.m. The winner advances to the quarterfinals at noon and the loser also plays at noon in the consolation quarterfinals.
The final seven matches of the tournament are Friday starting at 8 a.m. The title match, consolation championship and third-place match are scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
Hansen lost just one game in four section individual tournament matches this year.
No. 2 post for Belmont
Triple Crown hopeful California Chrome will open Saturday’s Belmont Stakes from the second post.
California Chrome’s bid to become the first Triple Crown winner since 1978 on the mile-and-a-half track will start inside, just as the previous two legs of horse racing’s grand prize did. California Chrome won the Kentucky Derby from the fifth spot and was in the third for the Preakness Stakes.
