Smith’s double helps Ducks tip Baysox

Jordan Smith’s double to center field leading off the eighth inning kindled a two-run rally, allowing the Akron RubberDucks (AA, Cleveland) to overtake the Bowie Baysox 3-2 on Thursday at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie, Maryland.

The Willmar native’s 1-for-3 day lifted his average to .216. With a slow start at the plate, the right fielder has been dropped to ninth in the order. He also started slow at Carolina in 2013 but ended up leading the Indians’ farm system in several hitting categories.

The RubberDucks close out a three-game set with the Baysox today and will have Easter Sunday off.

Jackson long jumps 19-11½ in California

North Dakota State University’s Rose Jackson (Willmar) used one of the best long jumps in school history to lift her to a big score in the California Invitational heptathlon on Thursday at Azusa Pacific University.

The Bison freshman totaled 4,872 points to place 14th out of 49 competitors in the nation’s largest multi-events competition.

Jackson’s score ranks her sixth all-time at NDSU in the heptathlon and among the top 50 performers in the nation this season.

Her point total was the highest by a Bison woman since All-American Whitney Carlson scored 5,556 for fifth place at the NCAA Championships in 2011.

Jackson opened the second day of competition with a leap of 19-11½ in the long jump. That mark ties Jackson for third-best on the NDSU all-time list behind only Carlson and Kristen Killoran.

Jackson followed up with a throw of 84-04 in the javelin and closed the day by finishing the 800-meter run in 2:21.74.

Rose holds the WHS girls long jump record at 18-5¾.
