Interfaith social justice series focuses on Somali immigrants
WILLMAR — Area residents are being encouraged to learn about the experiences of Somali immigrants in the area during three upcoming discussions to be hosted by Willmar churches.
At each discussion, the documentary “Rain in a Dry Land,’’ will be shown. The award-winning documentary will be followed by discussions assisted by Abdirizak “Zack” Mahboub of West Central Interpretive Services.
The Interfaith Social Justice sponsored discussions are scheduled:
- Sunday, 1 p.m., Unitarian Universalist Church, 500 Fifth Street, SW;
- Feb. 17, 4:30 p.m., St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 713, 12th Street SW;
- March 10, 11:45 a.m. Bethel Lutheran Church, 411 Becker Avenue SW.
“Rain in a Dry Land’’ is an 82-minute, award-winning documentary by Anne Makepeace.
It chronicles the fortunes of two Somali Bantu families. They are transported by relief agencies from years of civil war and refugee life to Springfield, Mass., and Atlanta, Ga.
As the newcomers confront racism, poverty and culture shock, the film captures their efforts to survive in America and create a safe haven for their war-torn families. Their poetry, humor and amazing resilience show us our own world through new eyes.
The Interfaith Social Justice Series is a collaboration of people from interested area churches who explore various social justice topics together throughout the year.
