The Iowa State Patrol says the accident happened around 3:50 p.m. Monday, just after Justin Bradfield got off the bus in rural Janesville.

The Patrol says Justin dropped something. When he went in front of the bus to retrieve it, the bus moved forward and hit him.

The boy was pronounced dead after 9 p.m. at Waverly Health Center.

His father, Ryan Bradfield, says Justin played trumpet in the school band and was "always happy."

The bus driver was identified as 38-year-old Michaela Siems-Dighton, of Cedar Falls. Janesville is about 10 miles north of Cedar Falls.

The Patrol is investigating the accident.
