Iowa DOT asks truckers to postpone trips for storm, high winds
Willmar Minnesota 2208 Trott Ave. SW / P.O. Box 839 56201

AMES, Iowa — The Iowa Department of Transportation is advising motorists that high wind speeds, with gusts exceeding 50 mph, and blowing snow are creating a serious travel hazard for commercial motor vehicles, other high-profile vehicles and vehicles towing trailers.

The Iowa DOT and Iowa State Patrol are reporting numerous traffic crashes (many are multi-vehicle incidents), jack-knifed vehicles and semi-tractor trailers unable to climb steep inclines that are blocking roads throughout the state.

The Iowa DOT is strongly recommending that commercial motor vehicles consider postponing their trip through Iowa until the winds diminish and safe travel conditions can be restored. Or consider another route that avoids the Midwest blizzard conditions. Travel conditions are expected to improve on Friday.

The National Weather Service has reported wind conditions this afternoon into this evening will remain strong. In the eastern third of the state, 50-60 mph gusts can be expected; in central Iowa 40-50 mph gusts; and in the western third 30-35 mph gusts.
