SACRED HEART - Irene Josephine Peterson, age 88, of Sacred Heart, died Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at the Granite Falls Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Renville. The Rev. Paul van de Crommert will be the celebrant. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Renville. Visitation will be Sunday from 5-7 p.m. in the Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Renville. Visitation continues on Monday one hour prior to the services at the church in Renville.

Irene Josephine Peterson was born October 17, 1924, on the family farm in Renville County to John and Agnes (Svoboda) Tomes. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Clara’s Catholic Church in Clara City. She attended school at Sacred Heart School, graduating in 1942. For a year, she worked at Yock’s Store in Clara City. She then became bookkeeper at the Sacred Heart Creamery where she worked until she was united in marriage to Myron Peterson on October 21, 1945, at St. Clara’s Catholic Church in Clara City. She lived on the Peterson family farm until 2004, when she moved into an apartment in Sacred Heart. For many years, Irene did sewing and mending for the residents of the RenVilla Nursing Home as well as for family and friends. She loved quilting, crafts, playing cards, and spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed her apple orchard and was well known for her delicious apple pies. She also enjoyed the 20 years spent in Texas with her husband Myron during the winter months. Irene was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church and held offices in the CCW. She was also a member of the Sacred Heart Women’s Club. Irene was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She will be sadly missed.

Survivors include her children: James (and Terri Tersteeg) of Eden Prairie, Barbara (and David) Ree of Spicer, Diane Hagen of Sacred Heart, and Donna (and Jerry) Agre of Sacred Heart; her grandchildren: Tim (and Sarah) Ree, Jennifer Ree (and fiancée James Schugel), Laurie (and Eric) Strey, Meridith (and Bryan) Wulf, Krista (and Shane) Peterson, Stefanie (and Ben) Ryan, Jonathan Agre, and Alison (and Cole) Neubauer; 10 great grandchildren, her brother Ernie Tomes of Swainsboro, GA; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Myron in 1992, an infant child, 3 brothers and 3 sisters and her son-in-law Wally Hagen.
