BROOTEN -- Irene May Mathiason, 93, of Belgrade, formerly of Brooten, died Sunday at the Belgrade Nursing Home.
The service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brooten. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the Cerebral Palsy Foundation.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade and for one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to the Cerebral Palsy Foundation.
She was born Feb. 25, 1916, in rural Parkers Prairie, to Syver and Florence (Barker) Iverson. She grew up on the family farm, graduated from Parkers Prairie High School and moved to Alexandria.
She married Lawrence Mathiason on May 21, 1936, in Albany. They lived in Alexandria and Glenwood before they bought the bakery in Brooten in 1948. They retired in 1975. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she was a WELCA Circle member, Sunday school teacher and volunteered where needed.
She is survived by her children: Junior of Belgrade, Sonja (and Richard) Nelson of Dana Point, Calif., Fred (and Elaine) Mathiason of Houston and Jim (and Norma) Mathiason of Belgrade; nine grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; siblings: Violet Lien of Moorhead and Clifton Iverson of Phoenix.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1985; a son: Gary; and four brothers.
