BIRD ISLAND - Irene Rouse, age 91, of Bird Island died Thursday, April 25, 2013 at the Golden Living Center in Olivia. Mass of Christian Burial is Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at 1:15 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bird Island with Rev. George Schmit as celebrant. Burial is in the church cemetery. Visitation is from 11:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to Renville County Hospice.

Irene Catherine Rouse was born June 23, 1921 on the family farm south of Bird Island, Minnesota to George and Apollonia (Neumann) Schulte. Irene went to country school in Norfolk Township. She helped on the family farm and also worked in the lunchroom at St. Mary’s in Bird Island. Irene married James Rouse on April 30, 1942. Irene and Jim lived on their farm north of Bird Island until 1978 and then moved into Bird Island. Irene continued to live there until the fall of 2009 when she moved into the Alzheimer's unit at the Golden Living Center in Olivia. Irene enjoyed gardening, ceramics, bowling, playing cards with friends and loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Catholic Council of Women, Catholic Aid Association and the Legion Auxiliary.

Irene is survived by her three children: Lois (Tom) Miller of Olivia, Richard (Carol) Rouse of Olivia and Casey (Barb) Rouse of Bird Island; her five grandchildren and her fourteen great-grandchildren: Jason (Brenda) Rouse, and children Michaela and Zach of Olivia, Jonathan (Natalie) Rouse, and children Addison and Bennett of Victoria, Jennifer (Ryan) McGraw, and children William, Malena, Aiden, & baby of Maple Grove, Kelly (Jon) Hagstrom, and children Logan and Luke of Hutchinson, and Carla (Troy) Elfering, and children Kya, Connor & Camri of Bird Island. Irene was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jim Rouse, one grandchild; her eight brothers: George, Clarence, John, Henry, Howard, Martin, Gerald, Jerome and her six sisters: Helen, Louise, Sally, Sylvania, Agnes & Marie.
