Irene Schafer Sept. 16, 1917 - July 26, 2013
RENVILLE - Irene Schafer, age 95, of Renville, died Friday, July 26, 2013, at the RenVilla Nursing Home in Renville. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Renville. The Rev. Dennis Labat will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Renville. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 5 p.m. at the Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Renville. Visitation continues on Wednesday from 9:30 until the 10:30 Mass at the church in Renville.
Irene Katherine Schafer was born on September 16, 1917, to George and Clara Taylor in Highmore, South Dakota. She graduated from Olivia High School in 1935. Irene married James Schafer on October 10, 1939, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church where they remained active members for the remainder of their lives. They farmed in Crooks and Flora Townships before moving to Renville in 1969. Irene worked at the Coast to Coast Store in Renville for many years where she enjoyed meeting and helping local residents. They retired from farming in 1979 and enjoyed winters vacationing in Texas. Irene was affectionately known as the butterfly lady and has an impressive butterfly pin collection. She also collected angels and we know she is now one of them.
Irene is survived by her son, Richard Schafer and his wife Barbara from San Diego, California; her grandchildren Jason and Julia Schafer of San Diego and Sarah and Craig Fountain of Santa Rosa, California; her great grandchildren Christopher and Ainsley Schafer and Alexander and Olivia Fountain; her sister Dorothy Steinbiesser of Olivia. She was preceded in death by her husband Jim, her parents and 4 brothers, Kenneth, Elmer, Lawrence and Donald Taylor and many nieces and nephews.
