Jacobson ties for third at MGA State Amateur
MEDINA — Andy Jacobson of Willmar and Eagle Creek Golf Club finished in a tie for third at the 110thh MGA State Amateur.
The first-day co-leader, after a 69, carded a one-over 73 on Wednesday for the second straight round.
He was one of just four golfers to finish under-par from an original field of 156, which was pared to 62 for the final round.
The temperature again melted into the low 90s at the Medina Golf and Country Club.
Sam Mathews of Midland Hill CC, Roseville, held on to his one-stroke lead after two rounds to win the Totton P. Heffelfinger MGA Amateur Championship Trophy. He shot 70-70-72 for a four under 212. Ben Welle of Moorhead, the first-day leader with Jacobson, finished at 213. Robert Bell of the University Golf Club tied with Jacobson at one-under 215.
Testifying to the challenges of the 7,200-yard layout and the sweltering conditions, the next best scores were at three over.
Jacobson, who tied for fifth in this major tournament a year ago in Hastings, was two over after nine holes at Medina. He eagled the monster 555-yard 14th to go two under for the tournament but a bogey 5 at No. 16 doused his chances for a late rally.
