Joann Hawkinson Feb. 9, 1953 - Feb. 2, 2014

OLIVIA - Joann Hawkinson, age 60, of Olivia peacefully passed away while surrounded by her family on February 2, 2014 at the Renville County Hospital in Olivia. Funeral services are Friday 11:00 a.m. at Cross Of Calvary Lutheran Church in Olivia with Rev. Matt Hausken officiating. Burial is in the Olivia Cemetery. Visitation is Thursday 4-8 p.m. at Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Olivia and continues Friday at the church for one hour prior to the service. Memorials are preferred which the family will donate to various charities and organizations that contributed to Joann's courageous recovery from stroke.

Joann Louise Hawkinson was born to Donald & Helen Lou (Dahlgren) Melberg on February 9, 1953 at Olivia, MN. She grew up on the family farm in Hector and graduated from Hector High School in 1971. Joann furthered her education at St. Cloud State University graduating in 1975 with a degree in education. She taught school at Litchfield, Ortonville and then at Hector. Joann was married to Harry Hawkinson on her family's farm on April 15, 1976 by Rev. John Burman. Harry and Joann made their home in Olivia and were blessed with two sons. Besides being a homemaker Joann also worked at the summer Migrant Program, worked with the special education program based at the Renville County Fairgrounds, was a managing partner of Expressions store in Olivia and was an accountant for Brandt Electric. Joann had also been the Redwood/Renville Counties Public Health Emergency Preparedness Program coordinator for several years. She was committed to and very active for many years with the family support group for military service members and their families. Joann was awarded the prestigious Molly Pitcher medal by the Minnesota National Guard for her service to the field artillery community. She was a member of Cross Of Calvary Lutheran Church in Olivia, loved tending to her flower gardens, watching her sons compete in sports and recently watching her granddaughters Sophie and Lila's activities. In July of 2012 Joann suffered a significant stroke and inspired many with her determination and remarkable recovery while residing at Glesener's in Bird Island where she made many special friends. Joann and her true love Harry continued making memories traveling in their "red wagon" and enjoying family time together.

Joann is survived by her husband Harry Hawkinson of Olivia, her two sons: Robert (and Jessie) Hawkinson of Plymouth and Jon Hawkinson of Olivia; her granddaughters: Sophie and Lila Hawkinson; her brothers: Charles (and Barbara) Melberg of Hector and Dean Melberg (and fianc Tina) of Newport News, VA; her two sisters: Connie Melberg of Granite Falls and Bonnie (and Roger) Haugen of Burnsville; and several nieces and nephews. Joann was preceded in death by her parents and her two sisters: Susie Melberg and Nancy Westphal.
