MADISON -- John Arbie Longman, 91, of Madison, died Friday at the Madison Hospital.
The service will be at 1:30 p.m. today at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Madison. Burial will be in Hayden Cemetery.
Arrangements are by Zahrbock Funeral Chapel of Madison.
He was born Oct. 27, 1917, in Archer, Iowa, to Arbie and Florence (Bonewitz) Longman. He graduated from high school in 1935 in Marshalltown, Iowa.
He married Eloise Simpson on June 9, 1940, in Madison. They lived in Marshalltown, Iowa and farmed for five years before moving to Madison in 1946. He farmed his entire life and completed his 70th year of harvesting crops in the fall of 2008. Eloise died Oct. 6, 1995.
He married Avis Maas on Dec. 19, 1996.
He was active in the Congregational United Church of Christ in Madison where he served as a deacon, taught Sunday School, and served in many other church capacities. He was on the township board and cemetery board.
He is survived by his wife; six children: John Jr. (and Kathy) Longman of Willmar, Lois (and Marlyn) Jerke of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Karen (and Mike) Hanson of Willmar, Mary Raphael of Tucson, Ariz., Tim (and Jody) Longman of Madison, and Pamela (and Mark) Henderson of Burnsville; three stepsons: Tyler (and LaVilla) Struck of Madison, Loring (and Mary Beth) Struck of Canby, Monte (and Tina) Struck of St. Joseph; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren; and two brothers: Loren (and Jane) Longman of Brooksville, Fla., and George Longman of Eldora, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his first wife; a stillborn baby boy; son-in-law: Jason Raphael; stepson: Areligh Struck; and stepdaughter: Louise (Struck) Grube.
