John was born on June 27, 1939, in Viking, Minnesota, the son of John and Mable (Pederson) Flodstrom. He was a lifetime learner starting on the family farm where he learned family values and positive work ethics. His first job off the farm was in road construction operating heavy equipment. When he met his wife, Helen, he was employed by Kegg Turkeys of Viking. Following their marriage on December 11, 1966, they moved to Menagha and then to Benson. During the next 35 years, he was employed by Earl B. Olson in the direct raising of turkeys.

He loved to tinker with small engines, often buying repairable lawn mowers at rummage sales to see if he could get them to run again. He enjoyed fishing and being in the outdoors. John was one of the first in the state to get a moose license and was successful in the hunt. He also enjoyed Sunday afternoons with his children putting puzzles together and showing his coin collection. After retirement, he was most happy when he was with his family, especially the granddaughters, or road tripping to parts unknown. He was a gentle man who walked softly and only left bent grass.

He is survived by his wife, Helen, of 47 years; children, Colette, Colleen (and David), Dean, Terry (and Anita; four grandchildren, Josh, Mindi, Melisa and Isabella and great grandchildren.
