John Wertish

John Wertish, age 91, died Sunday, March 2, 2014, at the Renville County Hospital in Olivia. Mass of Christian Burial is Friday 10:30 a.m. at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Olivia with Rev. Dennis Labat as celebrant. Burial is in the church cemetery and military honors are by the Olivia VFW and American Legion. Visitation is Friday at the church for one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are by Dirks-Blem Funeral Service of Olivia. Memorials are preferred and will be forwarded according to John's wishes.

John Henry Wertish was born July 24, 1922, on the family farm at Olivia, MN, to John F. and Elizabeth (Wood) Wertish. He attended country school, St. Aloysius School, and graduated from Olivia High School. After his schooling John worked for several years for area farmers. John served his country during WWll in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1945. John was a lifelong employee of the Milwaukee Railroad which later became the Burlington Railroad. He married Margaret Mary "Peggy" Mangan on June 19, 1947, at Elkton, SD. They made their home in St. Paul, MN, Webster SD, and then for many years in Aberdeen, SD. After his wife died in 2005 he moved to Fairview Place in Olivia to be near his family. Recently John has resided at the RenVilla Nursing Home in Renville. John had been a faithful member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Aberdeen and now at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalman, the Kiwanis, and the Elks. John had enjoyed traveling and spending winters with Peggy in Arizona, and playing cards, especially Bridge. John also loved dogs and was very fond of his Siberian Husky "Shy".

John is survived by his siblings: Rosemary (and Robert) Soukup of Fridley, David Wertish of Moline, IL, Robert (and Vonnie) Wertish of Olivia, and Janet Wertish of Bird Island; his sister-in-law Vallalee Wertish of Bird Island; and many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Peggy, and his siblings: Sylvania Tobias, Gerald Wertish, Joseph Wertish, and two infant siblings.
