Jon C. Bratberg July 6, 1937 - Jan. 26, 2009
ATWATER -- Jon Calvin Bratberg, 71, of Atwater, died Monday at Bethesda Heritage Center Nursing Home in Willmar following a battle with a glioblastoma brain tumor.
The service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hope Presbyterian Church in Spicer. Burial will be in the Spicer City Cemetery at a later date. His body was donated to the University of Minnesota Anatomy Bequest Program to help in education and research. Military honors will be provided by the Spicer American Legion Post.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the church in Spicer and for one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are by Green Lake Funeral Home in Spicer. Memorials are preferred to Hope Presbyterian Church and Rice Hospice.
He was born July 6, 1937, in Willmar to Carl and Florence (Henderson) Bratberg. He grew up in Spicer where he attended elementary school and graduated from Willmar High School in 1955. He enlisted in the Army in 1956 and was stationed in Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1959. He worked for Van De Riet construction, Duininck construction and Saulsbury Antiques.
He married Darlene Kragenbring on March 24, 1962, in Atwater. They lived on Darlene's childhood farm in Harrison Township, Kandiyohi County, and were dairy and crop farmers. He retired from dairy farming in 1998. He was diagnosed with a glioblastoma brain tumor in 2002.
He was named Outstanding Young Farmer in 1969. He served on the Atwater School Board, Harrison Township Board, Spicer Cemetery Board, Prairie Woods Environmental Learning Center Board and as a church elder.
He is survived by his wife; two children: Lori (and Owen) Anderson of Franklin and Peter (and Brenda) Bratberg of Spicer and five grandchildren.
