PAYNESVILLE - Joseph M. Sawrey, 89, of Paynesville died Friday in Harcourt, Iowa.
The service is at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Visitation is from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the Daniel-Anderson Funeral Home in Paynesville, with prayers by American Legion Post 271 at 6:30 p.m. and parish prayers at 8 p.m. Visitation continues at the church for one hour before the service.
He was born Nov. 8, 1918, in Cogswell, N.D., to James and Vesta (Oxley) Sawrey. On Nov. 4, 1937, he married Veronica Gordon in Cogswell. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and had been a resident of Paynesville since 1944. He owned various businesses in Paynesville, including a shoe store and a sundae store, worked for Hoiseth Motors and North American Creameries, and also owned an egg-candling place in Eden Valley. He was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church, the Paynesville Lions and Paynesville American Legion Post 271.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter: Claudia (and Bruce) Harrison of Harcourt, Iowa; daughter-in-law: Marie (and John) Kozulla of Apple Valley; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a brother: William (and Betty) Sawrey of California.
He was preceded in death by a daughter: Joleen;, and a son, David; and three brothers.
