BROOTEN -- "Just Desserts" opens Friday at John O's Dinner Theatre in Brooten.
In this murder mystery Judge Reginald P. Cogsworth is played by David Swinney. He is a curmudgeon who hates sweets and is judging a charity bakeoff, albeit grudgingly.
Countless entries have been whittled down to three: a tart submitted by Lucy "Scooter" Bright, owner of a nail salon, played by Wanda Lee; a Depression-era style cake by Edna Mae Carter, the local librarian, played by Barb Quade; and a rich torte created by Margaret Mason, a local society lady, played by Kristin Berry-Steffensen.
In the middle of tasting all the goodies, the judge drops dead, and it's up to Miss Peabody, the head of the contest, played by Lynda Swinney, and the audience to determine the murderer. There are clues in the theater, some hidden and some quite obvious. The audience also gets to question the three contestants, all of whom have had some unhappy dealings with the judge in the past.
The show is directed by Larry Syverson.
Performance dates are Friday through Sunday, and March 13-15. Tickets are $30 for dinner and the show. Seating for dinner begins at 5 p.m. with the show at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
