WILLMAR — The $3 million capital campaign for the Kandiyohi County Area Family YMCA has received a boost from an unnamed donor who has issued a challenge to campaign workers.

The self-named mystery donor promised to match every new pledge dollar for dollar, up to $10,000, reported to the campaign from the community kickoff phase that began April 8 until the final report on April 25.

The mystery donor asked to remain anonymous until the challenge is met. “Then and only then will I identify myself,” the donor said in a statement released by the YMCA campaign office.

Saying the pledge was meant to be a motivator for the campaign, the mystery person urged people to donate. “For every dollar they give, it’s like giving two.”

The YMCA’s capital campaign has raised $1.6 million so far. The effort was launched last year by a $500,000 contribution from Jennie-O Turkey Store, followed by gifts from numerous other local businesses and individuals.

Funds raised by the campaign will be used to expand the Y to meet growing demand. The YMCA opened in 2002 with 3,000 members; today it has more than 5,800 members.

The expansion will include a larger wellness center, a new multipurpose gymnasium with indoor track, a large wellness studio and two racquetball courts. The increased space will enable the Y to expand the number and variety of programs it offers. Ground will be broken late this summer for the project.
