WILLMAR -- Some things never change at the Kandiyohi County Fair.

The judging of everything under the sun -- from livestock to pumpkins to bundt cakes -- has remained relatively untouched for over a century. Old standbys like the tractor pull and bull riding at the 4-H Arena will continue as they have for years prior.

But fair organizers say they also like to keep things fresh. New exhibits, contests, and entertainment will be featured at this year's fair, scheduled from Aug. 5 thru 8 at the Kandiyohi County fairgrounds in Willmar. New to the fair this year will be acts like the country band The Hillbilly Mafia, playing Thursday at 4 p.m., and classic rockers The White Sidewalls, playing on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Also new is something of a butterfly theme this year, with a "butterfly scavenger hunt" on the opening day Wednesday, and another one on the closing day Saturday.

Kandiyohi County Fair Association secretary Cheryl Johnson was helping set up at the fairgrounds on Friday.

With a cool breeze off the lake and a clear sky on Friday, she said attendance at this year's fair would be spectacular if the weather holds out.

"We're hoping it stays like this," she said.
