That’s the message from the county’s Aquatic Invasive Species task force, which will be laying out its plan to keep undesirable species like zebra mussels from the county’s lakes and waterways.

The public information meeting will provide an opportunity for everyone to learn how they can protect the waters they enjoy, according to Rick Reimer, chair of the task force and with the Soil and Water Conservation District.

The county’s task force will outline plans to make a decontamination unit available to power wash watercraft that could harbor unwanted hitchhikers, whether its strands of Eurasian watermilfoil or dot-sized veligers that become the adult zebra mussels.

Plans by the county to provide inspectors at boat accesses will also be discussed.

Nick Brown, AIS specialist with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Margaret Johnson, administrator, Middle Force Crow River Watershed, and Chris Lester, Twin Lakes Services, will be among those discussing Kandiyohi County’s pro-active effort to prevent the spread of invasive, said Reimer.

The county is allocating funds to provide inspectors and the use of a decontamination unit this season.

Yet there is no doubt: The most effective tool to prevent the spread of invasive species is an informed public, said Reimer. The county will work hard to let people know what they can do to prevent the spread of invasive species. It’s everyone’s responsibility, he noted.

Free bailer plugs that allow water to drain out of boats will be available to all who attend.
