Kandiyohi man injured Monday in Willmar accident

WILLMAR -- A 60-year-old man from Kandiyohi was airlifted Monday evening from the scene of a two-vehicle accident in Willmar after the pickup he was driving crashed into the rear of a semi sometime after 6 p.m.

The man, whose name is expected to be released today, was the vehicle's only occupant. He was transported to St. Cloud Hospital with serious injuries.

East Highway 12 near the Holiday Inn was closed and traffic was re-routed while emergency vehicles responded to the scene.

The helicopter landed in the parking lot of Nelson International and took the victim directly to St. Cloud, according to an on-scene police officer.

According to preliminary reports, the Swift International semi was traveling eastbound and had stopped on Highway 12 to turn into the Cenex Travel Plaza when it was rear-ended.

The driver of the semi was not injured.

Willmar Police, the Minnesota State Patrol, the Kandiyohi County Rescue Squad and Willmar Ambulance all responded to the scene. For further updates, please check www.wctrib.com throughout the day.
