OLIVIA -- The Rev. Kenneth A. Giere, 82, of Olivia died Monday at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park.
The service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Zion United Methodist Church in Danube with burial in the church cemetery. Memorials are preferred to Multiple Sclerosis research.
Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Arrangements with Dirks-Blem Funeral Service of Olivia.
He was born Oct. 25, 1926 in Ortonville to Cyril and Edna (Steiner) Giere. He grew up in Fargo, N.D., and later at Big Stone City, S.D. He attended Westmar College at LeMars, Iowa, for one year and graduated from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion with a degree in accounting. He worked for one year as an accountant with Arthur Anderson.
He married Bertha Henning in 1949 in Ackley, Iowa. He graduated from Evangelical Theological Seminary in Naperville, Ill. in 1951. He served in Kasson and then at the Zion United Methodist Church in Danube from 1956 to 1966 when he started Pilgrim United Methodist Church in Plymouth and served until retiring in 1989.
He married Jennie Wurm on July 24, 1988. They lived in Plymouth for one year and in 1989 moved to Olivia.
He is survived by his wife, two sons: Ken A. Giere, Jr., of Del Norte, Colo. and Bob (and Kristy) Giere of Rochester; two stepsons: Paul (and Shelly) Wurm of Champlin and Lee (and Annmarie) Wurm of Detroit; eight grandchildren: two great-grandaughters and his brother: Warren (and Gladys) Giere of Sioux Falls, S.D.
He was preceded in death by his first wife and daughter: Leslee Wolf.
