WILLMAR -- A 26-year-old Kerkhoven woman was sentenced Wednesday to 24 months in prison, which was stayed, 10 years of probation, 70 days in jail and a $700 fine on a fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct charge for having a sexual relationship with a mentally handicapped man.

As part of her sentence handed down in Kandiyohi County District Court, Amber Marie Stassen was also ordered to submit to a psychological-sexual evaluation, complete sex offender treatment, have no contact with the victim or with developmentally disabled individuals, not possess pornographic or sexually explicit materials and not use alcohol or drugs except those prescribed. She was also ordered to register as a predatory offender.

The sentence was handed do-wn by District Judge David L. Mennis.

As part of a plea agreement, the charge was reduced from third-degree criminal sexual conduct.

The charge was filed after Willmar police received information in March that Stassen was having a sexual relationship with a now-20-year-old man at the Willmar group home where she was employed. The young man was a resident of the home and was considered a vulnerable adult because of his mental impairments and inability to protect himself from sexual abuse.

The investigation revealed that Stassen and the man had sex multiple times in February and March at the group home.
