The seat was formerly held by DFL Sen. Gary Kubly, of Granite Falls, who died March 2.

According to unofficial election results reported on the Minnesota Secretary of State's website, Koenen had 1,874 votes and Schultz had 947 votes.

Koenen will now face Leon Greenslit, an Independence Party member from Olivia and Gregg Kulberg, R-Hector in a special election April 10.

Although the primary election was a race between the two DFL candidates, the names of all four candidates were on the ballot.

According to the Secretary of State Greenslit received 154 votes and Kulberg had 714 votes.

The winner of the April 10 election will receive a certificate of election on April 17 and will serve through the end of the year.

Because of redistricting, all House and Senate seats are up for election in November.
