WORTHINGTON -- It's not a given that the Ridgewater women's basketball team will have a one-game playoff for the final spot in the MCAC state tournament after beating Minnesota West 64-56 Saturday.
Even though Alisha Schuerman had a career night with 21 points, including 15 in the second half for the Lady Warriors, what was a probable playoff game against the Bluejays early this week before Ridgewater hosts the state tournament is now more confusion that anything else.
Because of some discrepancies in the conference rules regarding the determination of how teams qualify for the tournament, the fate of three teams: Ridgewater, Minnesota West and Hibbing (a Northern Division team), will be decided by the conference directors.
"Our girls fought hard to get that playoff game," Ridgewater coach Carrie Ogdahl said. "We just have to sit and wait."
The Lady Warriors forced the issue in the second half, after trailing 35-28 in the first 20 minutes.
Schuerman, a 5-foot-10 freshman wing, scored six points in the first half, but didn't see action until about 12 minutes left in the second. But she fueled a resurgence from the field and the free-throw line.
"She had size on them and she posted up strong and used her body," Ogdahl said. "You could tell it was her night. She went in and dominated like a post should do.
"She gave us a spark and everyone hit their free throws at the end."
Schuerman was 6 for 7 from the line in the second half and the Lady Warriors were 27 of 39 overall.
Tara Thielke added 14 points and Danielle Goeman had 11 for Ridgewater. Schuerman and Alison Mason pulled down seven rebounds each.
