The community-based wind farm development, located in Meeker and Kandiyohi counties, intends to develop 340 megawatts of community-owned wind energy projects over the next six years.

The first phase is expected to be operational in about two years.

"We're about two-thirds done with our land leasing efforts, well on our way to securing a total of 30,000 acres for our development," said field specialist Jan Donahue. "We are very pleased with the warm welcome we've received from landowners and local officials."

More than 100 landowners have committed 21,000 acres of land to Lake Country's development to date.

This spring, Lake Country received resolutions of support from the Board of Commissioners from Kandiyohi and Meeker counties.

"It's exciting to hear people refer to this wind project as Meeker and Kandiyohi counties' wind project," said Steve Bergo, chairman of the Lake Country board of advisers.

"It isn't just located in the Meeker-Kandi area; it is part of our community, and the community is at the core of the development."

The community is invited to attend the 7 p.m. Global Wind Day event at the Kandiyohi Civic Center.

The company, under the management of National Wind, will join the American Wind Energy Association, the Global Wind Energy Council and hundreds of local groups, in celebrating the first Global Wind Day.

Events are being held worldwide to spread information about how wind energy works.
