Late first-half run boosts Willmar girls past Moorhead

WILLMAR -- At the midpoint of playing seven games in 12 days, the Willmar Cardinals looked sharp in trimming Moorhead 65-49 in girls basketball on Saturday.

The non-conference victory lifted the Cardinals to an 11-7 record, while going into another three-game week -- at Little Falls on Tuesday night, at home against section rival Marshall on Thursday night and at St. Cloud Apollo on Friday night.

Kayli Gimse scored 17 points, Shantel Kelly 16 and Megan Skalla 15 as Willmar won the opener of the Spud doubleheader.

The Cardinals trailed 21-18 with the first half winding down. Sara Kallhoff then ignited a 19-4 Cardinals' run with a pair of three-pointers.

Willmar scored the final 12 points of the half for a 37-25 advantage.

The Spuds tried to strike back, but never got closer than eight points in the second half.

Gimse scored seven points in a row on a three-pointer and then two inside buckets to stretch the Willmar lead to 57-45 with four minutes left in the game.

Skalla had one of her best games of the season, grabbing eight rebounds to go with 15 points. Gimse picked up 10 rebounds and made four steals. Kallhoff finished with eight points and Carrie Boike provided seven rebounds, three steals and three assists.

Leading Moorhead (5-16) were freshmen Kelly Tonn with 10 points and senior Erica Henrikson with six points, eight rebounds and three steals.

Willmar outrbounded Moorhead, 41-28. The Cardinals also san 20-of-25 free throws (80 percent).
