Legacy Run makes stops in the region

MORRIS -- Hundreds of motorcycles will be rumbling through west central Minnesota and the Upper Midwest during this year's American Legion Legacy Run.

The Minnesota Legacy Run riders will be in Morris for two hours Monday for a breakfast from 8:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. The riders are expected to pass through Benson about 7:30 a.m., then Clontarf and Hancock between 7:45 a.m. and 8 a.m. They will have spent the night in Montevideo.

All veterans are invited to the Morris American Legion to join the riders for breakfast and a short program featuring Morris Mayor Sheldon Giese and University of Minnesota Morris Chancellor Jacquie Johnson.

The ride begins Saturday in Anoka. Hotel stops are planned in Winona, Montevideo, Walker, Ashland, Wis., and Green Bay, Wis. The Anoka-to-Milwaukee run is approximately 1,300 miles.

The Minnesota ride is part of the national Legacy Run, which begins at Legion headquarters in Indianapolis and continues through Illinois, Missouri, Iowa and Minnesota before concluding at the Legion's National Convention in Milwaukee. Money raised through Legacy Runs is used for scholarships and other expenses for children of military personnel killed in post-9/11 conflicts.

This is the fifth year of the Legacy Runs, and about $1 million has been raised for the scholarship funds. The goal this year is $450,000, and more than 350 riders are expected to take part in at least parts of the Minnesota run.

Next year's Legacy Run is being planned, with the Legion's National Convention in Minneapolis.
