MONTEVIDEO — The BOLD Legion baseball team doesn’t need to win the Division II, District 7 tournament to advance to this year’s state tournament since, as host, the Mudhens get an automatic berth.

But that doesn’t mean BOLD is content to get in the easy way.

The Mudhens, comprised mostly of BOLD’s Class A prep state champions, rallied from a five-run deficit to overtake Morris 6-5 in the winners’ bracket final on Thursday.

BOLD starter Riley Kramer surrendered all five Morris runs in the first two innings, then settled in nicely, shutting out the Post 29ers while he and the rest of the Mudhen offense chipped away at the Morris lead.

Kramer was 3-for-4 and drove in three runs and Trent Athmann also had three hits and drove in a run.

While Kramer stifled the Post 29 hitters, BOLD scored three in the third inning and two more in the fourth before Jake Torgerson relieved starter Mac Beyer. Torgerson gave up just a run and struck out five in his four innings but the Morris offense couldn’t find any way around Kramer, who allowed just one earned run and struck out six while not issuing a walk.

BOLD will await the winner of today’s elimination game between Morris and Madison. The final is Saturday at 11 a.m. Since BOLD is hosting the state tournament, the Morris-Madison winner will also receive a state tournament bid.
