Legion Baseball: NLS wins twice at Fairfax tourney

FAIRFAX -- The New London-Spicer Legion team won two games at the Fairfax Tournament on Saturday.

NLS defeated Tri-Town 6-3 in its first game and then downed Fairfax 5-4. Fairfax toppled Tri-Town 5-3 in the triangular's first game.

NLS improved to 4-2 overall, while Tri-Town fell to 1-3.

Against Fairfax, NLS trailed 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Jordan Payne singled, advanced on Aaron Clancy's single, then scored the tying run when Tanner Thunstedt reached on an error. Aaron Ruter followed with a walk-off single to left centerfield that scored Clancy from third.

Clancy was 3-for-4 with a triple, and Payne scored two runs for NLS.

Against Tri-Town, Nick Bergeson pitched a solid game, scattering eight hits and walking just one in his seven innings of work.

Ryan Vraa had two hits and scored twice, and Bergeson had a triple among his two hits and scored twice.

Mitchel Macik drove in two runs against NLS for Tri-Town while Lucas Damm doubled in a run and junior Jordan Nelson had an RBI single against Fairfax. Damm had two hits in each game.

Vern Jark Tournament

ABERDEEN, S.D. -- The Morris Legion baseball team split four games at the Very Jark Tournament over the weekend.

Morris defeated Aberdeen 7-5 in 11 innings on Friday to open the tournament, and Chandler Erickson pitched a no-hitter in Morris' 6-0 win over Groton, S.D., on Saturday.

Morris also fell to Pierre 5-3 and lost a rematch with Aberdeen 2-0.

In the four games, Erickson had five hits and drove in three runs, and Mac Beyer had four hits and drove in two runs.

Tanner Picht had two doubles among his three hits and he drove in four runs and stole three bases. Tyler Henrichs and Jacob Torgerson also drove in two runs apiece.

Torgerson picked up Morris' (6-3) win against Aberdeen.

St. Cloud Tournament

ST. CLOUD -- The Willmar Legion baseball team split four games at the St. Cloud Tournament over the weekend, and picked up big victories over Rochester and a St. Cloud Chutes team comprised of St. Cloud Cathedral players that won a state prep championship last season and finished second this spring.

Willmar lost 11-1 to a Bemidji team featuring players who placed second in the Class AAA state tournament last week. Willmar also defeated Rochester 2-0 behind pitcher Brandon Christenson's strong outing.

Willmar also lost a 15-14 slugfest to Sauk Rapids on Friday, the downed the Chutes 7-3 on Saturday.

Willmar's 2-2 tournament finish put them at 5-5 overall, and they play next against the BOLD Mudhens on Tuesday in Bird Island.
