Legion baseball: Osakis overcomes NLS comebacks
MONTEVIDEO — Ky Zimmel’s double hugging the right-field line in the bottom of the seventh ended the New London-Spicer Legion’s season on Saturday at the ballpark in Montevideo.
The hit brought home Jordan Frederick from second base standing up.
The 7-6 victory propelled Osakis to the Division II state tournament as the representative of District 7.
NLS, which needed two victories over Osakis to get the nod, had fought its way back from a 4-0 first-inning deficit to lead 5-4 after five.
Osakis, which beat the Wildcats 3-0 on Wednesday, had gone four innings unable to score facing right-hand reliever Ryan Vraa. But in the lower half of the sixth, the bottom of the order started a two-run rally to regain the lead for Osakis 6-5 after six.So, NLS needed yet another comeback. In the top of the seventh, Brett Olson reached second with two outs on a fielder’s choice and another of the five Osakis errors. Tyson Gislason, the No. 9 batter in the order, was down to his last strike. The rangy third baseman tied into a Frederickson fastball and drove it into left field. Olson never slowed up rounding third but appeared a dead duck at the plate until the relay from third skipped past the catcher. Olson was safe and game was tied 6-6.Frederickson, who took over on the hill in the fifth inning, singled leading off the bottom of the seventh off Vraa and cruised home on Zimmel’s well-hit ball to right.Jonny DeGeest had started for the Cats but his pitching elbow flared up almost immediately and he was ineffective. He finished the inning but left the game in pain to ice the injury. Vraa, who pitched six innings on Thursday, had six innings left on his three-day pitching scorecard when he took over in the second.
