Legion baseball roundup: Madison beats Monte to win Region 4

MINNEOTA — Madison took two tight, one-run games from Montevideo over the weekend and will play Morris in the District II Section 7 Legion tournament in Minneota.

Madison downed Montevideo 2-1 on Saturday in the District 7 Region 4 tournament in Minneota.

After Monte knocked off Cottonwood 9-6 on Saturday, it squared off with Madison again on Sunday, with Madison scoring twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to win 3-2.

Montevideo finished the season 13-5 overall.

Madison plays Morris at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday in Montevideo.

Madison’s Brandon Hill doubled in two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning in the victory over Montevideo.

Ricky Schmitz singled in a run and another scored on an error in Monte’s two-run sixth. Madison’s Brandon Hill no-hit Montevideo through five innings.

In the seventh, Dylan Lillejord and Colby Siegert singled with one out and both scored on Hill’s double. Hill allowed three hits and struck out eight.

Morken didn’t allow an earned run or a walk and he struck out seven.

Rohloff allowed five hits and struck out six.

Cottonwood’s Cody St. Aubin hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to end Granite Falls’ season.

Randy Louwagie picked up the win for Cottonwood, while Granite’s Joe Samerud suffered the loss.

Grant Vagle hit a two-run, walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh to a complete a three-run rally and lift New London-Spicer over Kerkhoven.

NLS trailed 3-1 going into the final frame but notched four hits and a walk for three runs off Kerkhoven starter Austen Bowman.

Ryan Vraa pitched a complete game to earn the win and was 3-for-3 at the plate.

Kyle Baker was 1-for-4 and had 2 RBIs for Kerkhoven.

BOLD crushed Hector 14-4 in six innings Saturday in Bird Island.

The Mudhens used a seven-run first inning to quickly remove any doubt of the outcome.

The home team smacked 15 hits, led by Trent Athman’s splendid four hit performance.

Austin Weis had four RBI to go along with his three hits.

Lane Stadther, Riley Kramer and Weis each produced a pair of doubles.

Hector’s Dylan Kalenberg had two hits but took the loss on the mound. He was chased after giving up five earned runs on six hits in one inning.

Trevor Nissen started and earned the win for BOLD.

Hector took full advantage of six Prinsburg errors and downed the Orioles 8-5 Saturday afternoon.

 Prinsburg pitchers T.J. Stoel and Austin Bulthuis combined to yield only five hits but did not receive much help from their defense.

 Tate Lange struggled with his control, giving up six walks in 3.2 innings, but gave up only two hits to earn the win for Hector.

 Ben Maiers and Sam Ohden had RBI doubles for Hector and Prinsburg respectively.

The Morris Legion baseball team outscored Brandon-Evansville 16-2 in two games over the weekend and claimed the District 7 Region 1 tournament in Morris.

Morris, now 16-2 overall, plays Madison in the district playoffs at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday in Montevideo.

Morris downed B-E 7-0 on Saturday behind Mac Beyer’s two-hitter, and then defeated B-E 9-2 on Sunday, with Jake Torgerson working a complete game and striking out eight, to wrap up the region title.

In other region games, Wheaton defeated Hancock 6-4 and B-E moved into the final with an 11-1 win over Wheaton.

Beyer worked a complete game and also homered and drove in two runs to lead Morris.

Lincoln Berget had three hits and drove in two and Chandler Erickson was 2-for-4 and scored twice.
