Legion baseball roundup: Madison wins Ely tourney

ELY — The Madison Legion team defeated Ely, a prep state tournament team, in the semifinals on Saturday, then defeated Deer River 7-3 on Sunday to win the DQ Grill and Chill Classic tournament.

Madison opened the tournament with a victory over Minnetonka on Friday, then defeated Ely in nine innings and Brookston on Saturday.

In the title game, Daniel Baldwin picked up the win and Austin Haas and Brandon Hill both drove in a pair of runs.

Garrett Olson and Austin Domeier both had two hits and also had RBIs.

In the key semifinals game against Ely, the teams were tied 3-3 through eight innings. In the top of the ninth, Dylan Lillejord broke the knot with a two-run triple and Olson then singled in Lillejord, who also got the win.

Against Brookston, Olson worked a complete game, allowing six hits and striking out five.

Hill had three hits and drove in two runs and Ty Kanstrup singled in two runs. Cole Bungarden and Haas both had two hits.

Madison plays host to Montevideo at 7 p.m. today.
