Legion baseball roundup: Sandgren tosses no-hitter

BIRD ISLAND — Logan Sandgren threw a no-hitter with 13 strikeouts Thursday to help top-seeded BOLD topple Hector 9-1 and reach the Division II, Region 3 semifinals.

The Mudhens will face No. 2 Sacred Heart/MACCRAY at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in Fairfax. The winner advances to Sunday’s 1 p.m. championship, also in Fairfax.

Sandgren struck out the side in the fourth and fifth, but lost the shutout in the seventh after Hector’s Jake Pettit reached on an error, moved to second on a passed ball and to third on another error, and scored on a passed ball.

Sandgren also helped his own cause at the plate by going 3-for-4. Riley Kramer and Tyler Rock added two hits each for BOLD, which scored three runs in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Morris 6, Wheaton 1

Morris sent 10 batters to the plate in a five-run fourth inning and beat Wheaton to advance in Division II, Region 1.

Bryce Jergenson pitched a complete game and fanned five, and Jake Torgerson and Chandler Erickson were each 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Morris will play Brandon/Evansville 11 a.m. Saturday in Morris.

The No. 2-seeded Scarlets advanced to the region semifinals after producing a five-run fifth that broke a 4-4 tie. The Scarlets will face top-seeded BOLD at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday in Fairfax, while Prinsburg meets Hector in an elimination game earlier in the day at 10 a.m.

Sacred Heart/MACCRAY batted 10 in the fifth with Brett Feldman’s RBI double and Dylan Abraham’s two-run single highlighting the frame. Tyler Donner tied the game an inning earlier with an RBI single.

Carter Asche picked up the win after striking out seven and scattering seven hits over seven complete innings of work. Asche also got the Scarlets within one at 4-3 in the third with an RBI double.

Mitch Treml added three hits for the Scarlets and Nick Daugherty gave No. 3 Prinsburg an early 2-0 lead with a two-run single in the first.

The New London-Spicer Legion team rallied in the seventh inning but it fell short in a Division II, Region 2 playoff game on Thursday at Green Lake Diamond.

NLS now plays Kerkhoven at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in an elimination game in Osakis. Kerkhoven lost 11-1 to Osakis.

Osakis and Eden Valley-Watkins play at 10 a.m. Saturday. The loser of that game plays the winner of the NLS-Kerkhoven game at 3 p.m. Saturday in Osakis.

On Thursday, NLS’ Grant Vagle was 3-for-3 and Jordan Payne doubled in two runs.

EVW’s Alex Geislinger hit a two-run home run in the second inning and he was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and he scored twice.
