Legion Baseball Roundup: Willmar fights off Tri-Town

WILLMAR — Josh Warne threw three scoreless innings to open the game and was supported by 10 early runs before Willmar fought off visiting Tri-Town 12-7 Monday at Baker Field.

Willmar scored twice in the first on Brandon Christenson’s two-run single, produced three more runs in the second — highlighted by Adam Nibaur’s RBI double — and batted around in the third to put up another five runs.

Brett Swanson and Carter Sack both singled in two runs in the third and Cole Christenson opened the scoring with an RBI single.

Tri-Town then scored seven times in the fourth to make it a game. Igniting the big frame was a double from Derek Dengerud and singles from Peyton Kinzler, Cullen Hoffmann, Cory Schmidt and Ethan Schultz.

Willmar is at Kerkhoven on Wednesday, while Tri-Town is at BOLD today.

Kerkhoven 7, Hector 2

Kerkhoven batted around in the fourth inning to score three times without getting a hit as two Hector pitchers combined to issue four walks and hit two batters. Kerkhoven then scored four more times in the fifth behind singles from Brandin Dahl, Aaron Collins and Jordan Engler, and three Hector errors.

Kerkhoven starter Fred Mansfield worked the first five innings on the mound to earn the win. Kyle Baker then preserved the win by trumping four walks with five strikeouts in the sixth and seventh.

Jake Pettit in the first and Brad Ebbers in the sixth scored for Hector.

The visiting Scarlets scored their lone runs in the sixth when Dylan Abraham singled in Griffin Schaub and Tyler Moffenbier knocked in Abraham with his second hit of the game.

Seth Boerboom struck out nine in a complete-game victory for Cottonwood, which won it in the eighth on a sacrifice.

Madison stayed unbeaten and improved to 9-0 after getting a clutch two-out double from Joey Devorak in the fourth inning that brought in Dylan Lillejord and Cole Bungarden.

Austin Haas worked all seven innings on the mound, striking out nine and giving up four hits and four walks to get the win.
