Legion Baseball: Willmar tops Kerkhoven, 5-2
KERKHOVEN -- John Sawatzky singled in two runs and starter Jake Damhof picked up the win as the Willmar Legion got by Kerkhoven Legion 5-2 on Thursday.
Sawatzky, who was a reserve catcher for Ridgewater College this spring, singled in Adam Fagerstrom in the first and Andrew Bangen in the third inning. Both had reached on a single and then stole second.
Willmar led 4-0 before Kerkhoven got on the board on Bryan Schlagel's RBI single. Schlagel's also got in the other run with a sacrifice fly in seventh. Jake Rambow, who relieved Damhof in the fifth, got the final out on a sharp grounder to third with the tying run at the plate.
Damhof allowed four hits and one run over 4 1/3 innings with seven strikeouts.
Schlagel was the losing pitcher, allowing seven hits, including a double to Tyler Brower. Austen Brower hurled 1 2/3 innings of no-hit relief.
