Legion baseball: Willmar tops Lincoln, Neb.
WILLMAR — Visiting Willmar Electric Service — a corporate-sponsored team from Lincoln, Neb. — gave Willmar Post 167 a scare in the ninth inning after the home team scored four runs in the eighth, but Post 167 held on to collect a 7-5 win Saturday evening at Bill Taunton Stadium.
Former Willmar resident David Chapin coaches the WES team and brought his squad up from Nebraska for the weekend to play Post 167 and New London-Spicer.
His son, Mike, drove in the game’s first run with a first-inning single. Post 167 answered in the second when Brandon Christenson — who was 3-for-4 — singled, stole second and scored on Josh Tinklenberg’s single. Austin Smith — who was 2-for-2 — singled and stole second before scoring in the third and Carter Sack singled leading off the fifth and scored on Christenson’s triple to tie game at 3-3 as WES scored twice in the top half of the fifth.
Brandon Wedel threw seven effective innings for Post 167, allowing just four singles and shaking off issuing five walks by striking out seven. But his teammates couldn’t break the tie until the eighth when reliever Logan Wigton was on the mound.
WES got the first two Post 167 batters out in the eighth, but Brett Swanson singled and WES reliever Patrick Wagner issued three straight walks and Tony McCleary followed with an RBI single to put the home team back in front.
Post 167 also recorded two quick outs in the ninth before the next five batters reached to extend the inning. Tyler Stegeman then notched a strikeout to save Wigton’s victory.
Post 167 improved to 14-4 and play at Marshall on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
