Leo Joseph Fiala

Leo Joseph Fiala was called home to the Kingdom of his Heavenly Father on July 22, 2014, having lived to reach the age of 94 years and 23 days. His life will be celebrated beginning with a visitation on Thursday, July 24th at Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood from 5-7:00pm, with Parish Prayers at 7:00pm followed by a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, July 25th at 11am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glenwood with visitation one hour prior. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Glenwood.

Leo Joseph Fiala, son of Henry and Marie (Johanek) Fiala was born on June 29th, 1920 in Glenwood, MN. He attended and graduated from Glenwood High School. Upon graduation, Leo carried on the family tradition in agriculture assuming fulltime responsibility on the farm.

On February 17th, 1944 Leo began what would be nearly a 69 year unity when he entered into Holy Matrimony with Ethelle Madonna Gehlhar at Church of The Holy Name in Minneapolis, MN. To this union, 8 children were born. The family made their home on the family farm NE of Glenwood, running a successful grain and dairy operation until Leo retired in the Fall of 1988 and, together with Ethelle, moved to the City of Glenwood. The highlight of Leos retirement years was his daily trip back to the farm to assist his son, David, with field work and other farm chores. He continued this routine until he was nearly 90 years of age.

Leo will be remembered as man of strong Christian faith and great integrity. He believed in a days work was not over until all of the work was done and expected his family to do the same. Though farm life kept him very busy, Leo always had time to help others. Whether it was working in a basement, on the farm, or helping a grandson build a pinewood derby car, Leo was quick to share his great handyman skills with anyone that needed them. The fruits of his labor still surround the many people he helped and will be cherished for years to come. During his life, Leo was an active member of the NFO, Farmers Union, and The Knights of Columbus. He was also a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Leo is survived by sons, Gary (Sharon) Fiala, David (Karla) Fiala, and Bill Fiala all of Glenwood, daughters, Rose (Jerry Sr.) Searcy, of Waite Park, MN, Bonnie Simenson, of Waite Park, MN, Peggy Alexander, of Glenwood, and Laurie Fiala, of Glenwood. He also leaves behind 18 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; and his sister, Lorraine Chermak, of St. Paul, MN. Others that will miss him include, friends and caregivers Geri Gross of Glenwood, MN, Bonnie Holthuser, Heidi Runningen and Gordy Alexander of Tomah, WI.

Leo was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Marie; his wife, Ethelle (in 2012); son, Roger Fiala; two grandchildren, Theresa Hemmesch and David Larson, and son-in-law, Jerry Simenson.
