Leona M. Schroeder July 13, 1905 - April 7, 2009
NEW LONDON -- Leona Mary Schroeder, 103, of New London died Tuesday at GlenOaks Care Center in New London.
The service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hope Presbyterian Church in Spicer.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are with Johnson Funeral Home in New London.
She was born July 13, 1905, in Kossuth, Iowa, to Joseph and Wilhelmina Andrews. The family lived in Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota when she was growing up. She attended school in Waterloo, Neb., and graduated high school in Randolph, Neb. She attended Wayne State Teachers College where she received her teaching certificate. Her first teaching job was in Newman Grove, Neb., for three years. She then taught in DeSmet, S.D.
She married Harold Schroeder on June 28, 1932, in Miller, S.D. They lived and worked in Clark, S.D., for three years and then moved to Lemmon, S.D., in 1935. Harold died in 1950 and she resumed her career by teaching third grade in Lemmon. In 1955, the family moved to Huron, S.D., where she taught third grade for the next 15 years. During that time, she completed a bachelor's degree at Wayne State Teachers College. After retiring in 1970, she moved to New London, where she lived for 39 years.
She was a member of Hope Presbyterian Church in Spicer where she served as deacon and was in HPW. She was a member of PEO and Alpha Kappa Gamma.
She is survived by her daughter: Janet (and Pat) Saulsbury of Spicer; one granddaughter; three great-grandchildren; and a brother: Wendell (and Harriet) Andrews of Sioux Falls, S.D.
She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, one sister and one grandson.
