Leona Mary Schafer, age 97, of Renville, died Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at the St. Cloud Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, August 5, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Renville. The Rev. Dennis Labat will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Renville. Visitation will be Tuesday from 9:30 until the 11:00 a.m. Mass at the church in Renville. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the donors favorite charity. Arrangements with Dirks-Blem Funeral Home, Renville, Minnesota.

Leona Mary Schafer was born on April 29, 1917, in Stevens County to Frank and Mary (Pille) Kopel. Her family moved to Murray County when she was three years old. She grew up on a farm there and attended country school. Leona was united in marriage to Robert Schafer on September 29, 1936 at the Holy Redeemer Church Parsonage in Renville. They moved to a farm in the Renville/Danube area and continued to farm the rest of their lives. She was a long time member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Renville. She loved to cook and bake, grow flowers, and play cards. Education and learning were very important to Leona, and she encouraged her children and great grandchildren to get the best education possible.

Survivors include her two children: Carol (and Jim) Kuebelbeck of St. Joseph, MN, and William Schafer of Renville; six grandchildren: Amy (and Mark Neuzil) Kuebelbeck, Karen (and Tracy) Sattler, Jane (and Brian) Williams, Paula Kennedy (and friend Andy Smith), Stacy (and Bob) Paulsen, and Molly (and Tim) Radaich; and 24 great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert in 1980, and her siblings: Regina Mahal, Julia Pastoors, Alma Thornton, Rita Brown, Bertha Kopel, Rosemary Ashton, George Kopel, Paul Kopel, and Bro. Francis Kopel; and one great grandson Gabriel Neuzil.
