Lester Helmuth Bode was born to Arthur and Beatrice (Friderich) Bode on November 20, 1937 in Nicollet Township. He grew up on a farm in Nicollet and attended elementary school at Immanuel Lutheran School in Courtland. Lester was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church, in Courtland. He was a 1955 graduate of Nicollet High School. On August 6, 1960 Lester married Lenora Drill at Immanuel Lutheran Church, in Courtland. They lived in New Ulm for nearly 26 years before they moved to Long Lake near New London.
In his early years, Les was a respected amateur baseball player and manager for Courtland and the New Ulm Brewers, in the 1960's through the 1970's. He was inducted into the New Ulm Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991, an honor that meant a lot to him. Les worked as a feed store operator and in the grain elevator business in the New Ulm area and in Regal, MN, for more than 30 years. Well into his retirement, Les worked as a shuttle driver for the railroad and enjoyed this immensely. Lester enjoyed fishing, bird watching, looking out over the gardens and spending time with his family. He also enjoyed life on the lake and spending time with his trusted Golden Retrievers.
The family would like to say a special thank you to the doctors at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital, Dr. Fadden, Dr. O'Leary and especially Dr. Graber, for their outstanding care of Les over the past 22 years. We would also like to thank his family physician, Dr. Roiseland and his nurse Barb. They have all been wonderful caregivers and supporters.
Les is survived by his wife, Lenora, children: Jonathan (Kristi) Bode of Rogers, Jessica (Timothy Van Eps) Bode of New London; and 3 grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings: Willard Bode of New Ulm, Gene (Shirley) Bode of New Ulm, Gerald (Carol) Bode of New Ulm, Glenn (Bonnie) Bode of Courtland, Marcus (Rachel) Bode of Courtland, and Frank (Marcy) Bode of Courtland; and brother-in-law Norman Nelson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, infant brother, sister Meryl Nelson, and sister-in-law Tootie Bode.
