Letter: America has lost its way

In the '50s America was a great nation with a purpose, a direction and a moral compass to guide us. In the '60s we lost our way. Americans believed we had achieved our successes and greatness by our own means, and not because of God's providence on whose principles this country was founded.

Secular humanism began to encroach upon America. America forgot what its founders stood for and even what FDR had proclaimed, "If the spirit of God is not in us and if we will not prepare to give all that we have and all that we are to preserve Christian civilization in our land, we shall go to destruction." And down to destruction we have gone.

As Judeo-Christian principles were pushed out of the public square, the spirit of God and his absolute truths were replaced by a spirit of moral relativism, a belief that there is no absolute right or wrong. Look at the benefits bestowed by the newer morality: alcoholism, drug abuse, teen pregnancy, abortion, homosexuality, school violence, child abuse, pornography, rape, robbery and murder pervade our nation. Now we find ourselves a morally and economically bankrupt nation. And while liberals will deny it, history affirms that the economic vitality and moral health of a nation are irrevocably intertwined.

On Nov. 2 you will need to choose a side in this election. When asked if God was on the side of the Union, Lincoln replied, "Sir, my concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God's side, for God is always right."

The Democrats have already promised to continue pushing their economically suicidal, life-destroying policies in Washington and St. Paul. Conservatives promise a return to a constitutionally based, fiscally sound life-affirming government. We can turn this country around by voting for conservatives.

It's not too late, "if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land." (2 Chronicles 7:14)
