Letter: Death penalty comparisons
You apparently did not give much thought to the comparison you made to Oklahoma. Yes, Texas has almost five times as many executions as Oklahoma during the same period of time. I suspect many readers, after reading that bit of information, put the paper away, convinced that Texas is 500 percent tougher than Oklahoma.
You didn’t bother to tell your readers that Texas has a population 6.84 times that of Oklahoma. If Oklahoma’s execution rate was the same as that of Texas, (calculated on a per 100,000 of population basis), their number of executions would be 712.
