Letter: Diabetes program is needed

Email

A necessary part of Rice Hospital is getting ready to bite the dust. I got my letter several days after reading of the closing in the paper. My first thoughts were total surprise that such a needed part of Rice would be closing. Ten years ago I was diagnosed with diabetes and felt overwhelmed at how to manage this disease. My doctor recommended going to the Diabetes Center where I found help. With the help of the knowledgeable, caring staff I was put at ease and soon learned that it was a manageable disease. Over the years I have gone back for periodic updated education and insulin pump training.

When reading of the closing, my first thoughts were where do I go now? How far will I have to drive to receive such excellent care? I agree with Becky West's letter of Aug. 27 regarding the extra frills added to Rice. Are they used as much as the Diabetes Center? Were they needed to make a quality hospital? When you need to go to the hospital, you aren't looking for a beautiful waterfall and other furnishings; you are looking for quality care.

I would like to take this time to thank the staff at the Diabetes Center. To the office staff, the nurses, and the dieticians, thank you for all the help you have given me. My diabetes is under control because of you and I couldn't have done it without your guidance. You will be missed and I am sure I speak for many patients in hoping you find employment elsewhere.

I would hope more thought would be put into closing such a needed part of Rice Hospital.
