Letter: Keep church, state separate
Europe finally freed itself of the tyranny of state churches with a vengeance! No one goes to church over there anymore.
One would think that churches here would take a lesson and stop trying to force their religious views on the general public by religious amendments to our Constitution. The document was never intended to be a national confession of faith but a protection for all of the people under the law -- and not just heterosexuals.
Our churches have thrived under a strict separation of church and state. Let's not invite what happened in Europe here and obtain the same results!
It is only the court system that guarantees civil rights to minorities, not the electorate. If blacks were to depend upon the American voter to grant them civil rights, you can bet they would still be picking cotton as slaves under the scorching Alabama and Mississippi sun.
