The GOP has launched another war of domestic terror. The first was "Be afraid, WMD! Mushroom cloud, 9/11-Iraq!" All to manipulate us into an unnecessary war! Now it's "Be afraid! Government takeover, euthanasia, government bureaucrat!"
It takes a twisted mind to demonize payment for aid in creating voluntary living wills. Ex-Gov. Sarah Palin called it a death panel; Newt Gingrich talks of euthanasia and Sen. Chuck Grassley babbles about "pulling the plug on granny." This is the provision that 204 Republican representatives and 42 Republican senators voted for in the Medicare bill of 2003 (the bill prohibited the government from negotiating the price of medicine and the reason why we pay more for medicine than other countries!)
All people over 18 should have living wills. It's not only a person who has to make a decision about a DNR for a parent. Think of the Terri Schiavo case. Schiavo was a young woman when she entered a vegetative state. The lack of a living will caused a major problem between her husband and her parents.
Insurance companies and the GOP are telling you to be afraid of government takeover and rationing. The only government takeover that I know of was during the Schiavo case when the Republican Congress passed an act and Bush interrupted his vacation to fly back to Washington. As for rationing, have you heard of a denial of service by that government program Medicare? On the other hand a cancer patient with a $10,000 lifetime cap on her insurance is rationed.
"Be afraid!" The GOP paints a fearful picture of a government bureaucrat standing between you and your doctor. "Do you want a government bureaucrat deciding whether you can have a necessary procedure?" Well, yes. I'd rather have a government civilian who has nothing to gain rather than an insurance bureaucrat whose bonus depends on how many claims he rejects.
Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) gleefully said "If we're able to stop Obama on this it will be his Waterloo. It will break him." Do Republicans believe that "breaking Obama" is more important than Americans' health?
